On the Summit of Mount Cuculo
On the Summit of Mount Cuculo
The natural balcony of the Picentini Mountains
Climbing Mount Cuculo means discovering a landscape that speaks through the voice of the wind and the scent of the woods. The hike starts from Capitignano, in the municipality of Giffoni Sei Casali, and winds through olive groves, hazelnut orchards, and centuries-old chestnut woods that accompany walkers almost to the summit. The path gently climbs along the mountain slopes, offering at every step new views over the Picentini Valley — a mosaic of hills, villages, and cultivated fields stretching towards the Gulf of Salerno.
As you ascend, the landscape slowly transforms: the aromas of Mediterranean scrub give way to the cool shade of the forest and the whispering of leaves. From the summit, the panorama opens 360 degrees — to the west, the sea; to the east, the Apennine ridge connecting Mount Terminio and Mount Acellica, symbols of the Picentini Regional Park. It’s a panoramic and regenerating trekking experience — ideal for those seeking nature, silence, and breathtaking views.
Curiosity
Mount Cuculo is one of the most scenic viewpoints of the Picentini territory: on clear days you can see the peaks of Mount Cervati and Mount Mai, and to the south, the blue line of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The name “Cuculo” comes from the Italian word for the cuckoo bird, whose song — symbol of awakening and freedom — often accompanies hikers in springtime.
Recommended equipment
Trekking shoes, hiking poles, at least 2 L of water, layered clothing, packed lunch, and a camera to capture the view.
